Sun 28th July
Overdue fine weather greeted the large entry who contested Kieran Mangan`s Presidents Prize last Sunday. Keeping the ball on the fairway was the key to scoring as the rough was heavy and very penalizing. The event was to be decided over 27 holes. After the first 18 it was Kieran Dunning (22) who led the way with a 68. Alas he could not maintain his form over the additional nine and had to settle for the Leading Qualifier prize. Ian Kavanagh (24) won the Committee Prize with 113 net, a deserved prize for the hard working Club Secretary. There was a family battle for third and fourth net which went all the way to a countback. Pat Rogers (14) edged out his son in law Stephen Egan Sr. (10) after both finished on 105.
First Gross went to Michael Brereton (2), the Geashill resident shooting a two over total of 109. 2nd Gross went to Robert Hogan (4) on 113. Runner up was Derek Hannon (1), the Croghan man shooting 104 over the 27 holes. The winner of the President`s Prize was Tullamore man Terry O`Neill (10) who followed up his opening 70 with a tidy 33 to win by a single shot. Terry played in Mullingar the previous day and by his own admittance was rubbish, but he obviously got all the bad golf out of his system overnight. Well done to him on securing the President`s Prize for 2016. The prize giving will be held next Saturday, 3rd September, at 7.00pm, to coincide with the Lady President`s Prize. A buffet will be served and to encourage more men to attend a nine hole scramble will proceed events from 3.00pm.
David Brazil had a day to remember in last Thursdays open. Not only did he shoot 41pts to win, but he also aced the fifth where he hit a five wood downwind straight into the hole.
The Captain celebrated his birthday on Saturday by generously inviting his committee on a day out to Mullingar GC. After a fine day`s golf and an excellent meal, Dan Cunningham was declared the winner of the large cash prize on offer, before losing it all a few hours later at the Greyhound Stadium.
