Mens August Medal 07/08/16

August Medal GOY
7th August

Scoring proved to be tough in the Edenderry Golf Academy sponsored August Medal as competitors fought against a strong westerly wind. Still celebrating the arrival of his second child, Neil Garton (10), brought that happiness onto the course, to score 69 net. Neil was out in the final group and his score was good enough to claim the Medal but only after a countback. Former Captain Tom Dunne (20) was the long time leader in the clubhouse with 69, but he eventually had to settle for the runner up spot. Derek Hannon (1) once again claimed a Gross win with a 75, pipping his good pal Robert Hogan (4) by one. 3rd Net, was taken by the in form Niall Smyth (12) with 71. Niall claiming this prize on countback from fellow Mount Lucas player, Peadar Hanley (15), who had to be content with 4th Net.

Next weekends competition is a Single Stableford GOY qualifier for the Shap Mangan Trophy sponsored by Padraig Arthur Quantity Surveying. On the Inter Club front Pat Fay`s Tudenham Cup team will be looking to progress against Mount Temple.

Junior golf continues every Monday morning. It is not too late to enrol your child for a fun introduction to golf under the watchful care of David Hughes and volunteers. Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday.

Bookings can be made at www.castlebarna.ie or by phoning the clubhouse on 057 9353384.

Mick Keating R.I.P.: It was with great sadness that Castle Barna bid farewell to one of its best known characters during the week. Mick Keating was one of the original members of the fledging nine hole course in 1994, and always remained a loyal supporter of the club. Every Sunday whatever the weather, and quiet often before daybreak, Mick would be the first person on the course. After his round he would often joke that he was the “leader in the clubhouse”. He will be sadly missed by his regular “early bird” playing partners and all of us who ever played with him. On behalf of the members of Castle Barna, our deepest condolences to his wife Theresa and family.
