Mens Single Stableford Results 26th March

Castle Barna Golf Club. Sunday 26th March. Single Stableford.
The fine weather has allowed the course to dry out considerably and these factors combined to attract a good entry for last Sunday`s competition. Eoghan O`Donoughue (24) had perhaps his best ever day on the golf course when he compiled a terrific 44 points to win the competition. A great back nine of 23 points, helped by birdies on 10 and 13, got the job done for Eoghan, who celebrated his first outright win by treating the family to a slap up meal afterwards.

Div 1 went to Brendan Byrne (7) with 38 points. Liam Scally (13) was well rested after a tour to the West during the week and shot 40 points to take Div 2. Local man Ger Peyton (15) had his best round in a while, scoring 42 points to claim Div 3 on countback. Div 4 went to Kieran Dunning (21) with a modest 32 points again on countback. Div 5 was taken by Noel Maguire (22) on 38 points.

The Thursday Open was won by Shane Kelly from Killerig GC in Co. Carlow, who impressed on his first visit to the club scoring 41 points.

Next weekend`s competition is a Three Man Champagne Scramble.

The Walsh Kealy sponsored Thursday 9 Hole competition proved to be a great addition to the calendar last year, and it makes its return on Thursday 6th April.

Panels are being formed for the various Inter Club competitions which will be getting underway in the coming weeks. Members should check the team sheets they would be eligible for, which have been posted on the notice board.

Sunday 12th March Foresomes

Castle Barna Golf Club. Sunday 12th March. Foresomes.
The weekend Foresomes competition was dominated by players from Ballinagar, the village producing the first and second places. After tasting his first ever win recently, Tom Ballesty again produced the goods as he and his partner Tony O’Toole shot a 68 net to claim first place. Their win was by virtue of a countback over the father and son combination of Donal and Fergal Scally. Third place with 69 net went to Dave O’Connell and Declan Rogers. The competition served as the qualifier for the foresomes matchplay, and attracted a very good entry. The draw for the matchplay stages will be made shortly.

During March the GUI are promoting a “Handicap Awareness” campaign. Setting out in a qualification with the aim of getting 0.1 back, or not trying you best, is viewed as cheating. This is unacceptable behaviour and needs to be eradicated in all golf clubs throughout the country. All golfers should try their best on every hole and not attempt to manipulate the system in order the gain advantage over your fellow golfers. There are information leaflets available in the clubhouse, or for more detailed information, visit www.golfnet.ie/HandicapAwareness.

Captains Drive In Sunday 5th March 2017

Captains Drive In 2017

Captain`s Drive In: The wet weather thankfully took a break to allow the Captain’s Drive In to take place last Sunday. The three Captains for 2017 Mary Mangan (Ladies Captain), James Mahon (Mens Captain) and Ryan Maher (Junior Captain) all arrived in elegant style in a beautiful horse drawn carriage. There were many good luck wishes, hugs & kisses from the large crowd in attendance before the trio made their way to the first tee.

First up was Ryan, and with no sign of nerves, hit a beauty up the left side. Mary followed and after one quick practice swing sent her ball off straight and true. A nervous James was next up, but having spent the last week at the driving range he had nothing to worry about, as he produced a fine drive, and got the golfing season up and running. Best wishes to our Captains in the year ahead.

A 9 hole mixed scramble followed. Apart from one shower everyone enjoyed themselves. The winners were Joe Mann, David O`Connell & Caitlin Ni Shuilleabhain with a terrific round of 26.6 net. Second place went to Andy Fagan, Derek Hannon and new lady member Lorna Barnewell.
