Men’s Club News 5th-6th May 2017

The latest GOY Stableford was played in beautiful sunshine last Sunday. Robert Hogan (4) really enjoyed the day shooting a sub par round for 41 points to take a fine victory. Dominic Goodings (14) had his best round in a while shooting 40 pts to claim the runner up spot. Div 1 went to Stephen Egan Snr (11) with 39 pts. Stephen Comerford (13) came out on top in Div 2 with 38 pts. Michael Mockler (19) took Div 3 with 39 pts, with David Malone (22) scoring 38 pts in taking Div 4 after a count-back. David completing a good week after winning Thursdays 9 hole competition. The Central Towns team recorded a good win over Borris GC. Seanie Geoghegan & Donal Scally recorded comfortable wins at home. At the Carlow venue Keith Bracken gained the all important third point and the other two ties were called in. The lads will have a shorter journey in the next round when the face The Heritage.

The under 15 Leinster Boys team gave a very good account of themselves against Tullamore. Despite having only four players available and thus having to concede a game, Adam Kelly & Cathal Ryan played some terrific golf to win two games in Tullamore. After the first leg they only trail 2 – 3, and the match is very much alive ahead of the return leg at home next weekend. The draw has been made for the Single`s Matchplay and has been posted on the notice board. Next Weekend`s competition is a single stableford. Ladies Results 5th & 6th May 2017

The Ladies Club played an 18 hole Single Stroke GOY on the weekend of the 5th & 6th May. This well supported competition was closely contested with Bridie Fay taking first prize on a nett score of 74, two players brought in a score of 75 nett and second place went to Mary Foy whose better performance on the back nine edged her ahead of Caroline Curran who finished in third. This weeks Wednesday 9 hole Single Stableford was sponsored by Ber Malone and the winner with a score of 19 points was Mary Colgan with Ber Malone taking 2nd place on 17 points. Our ladies played Cill Dara ladies in the Challenge Cup at Edenderry Golf Club on Friday the 5th May. This was a very sporting event with the Cill Dara ladies claiming victory on the day, unfortunately our ladies will not be progressing to the next round.

The Ladies Club will play an 18 hole Australian Spoons Scotch Foursome on the weekend of Friday 12th May – tee time 10 am & 5 pm, and Saturday 13th May – tee time 8.30 am. The Ladies 9 hole competition on Wednesday the 10th May will tee off at 10.30 am and 5 pm. Castle Barna are also promoting a “Ladies get into Golf Programme” begining on Tuesday the 9th May. Sunday, 30th April: OPEN Single Stableford. CSS 73

Ballinagar players took the top two positions in last weekends Open Singles. Darren O`Meara (25) shot a great 42 Pts in the windy conditions to claim first place. Darren can now look forward to a significant handicap reduction. Runner up with a fine 41 pts was Fergal Scally paying off 6. These two were comfortably ahead of the rest of the field as the weather effected many players chances. In Div. 1 Michael Farrell (12) took top spot after a countback with 34 pts. Ken Fitzpatrick (15) won Div 2 on 36 pts. Gerard Kenny (16) claimed the Div. 3 spoils with 37 pts. Alan Graham (21) was top in Div. 4 with 38 pts.

The Furlong Open on bank holiday Monday was won by local man David Brazil (3) with 36 pts, with Mullingar visitor Gearoid Sheridan (25) second with 35 pts.

Ian Kavanagh with an eagle and three birdies was the winner of the latest edition of the Walsh Kealy sponsored Thursday nine hole competition. Next weekend`s competition is a GOY Stableford. Good luck to our Central Towns team who are in action on Sunday when they take on Borris, with three of the five matches at the Carlow venue.

Ladies Results 28th & 29th April.

The Ladies Club played the qualifying round of the Castle Barna Trophy on the weekend of the 28th & 29th April.  The competition; a Scotch Foursomes, was well supported and the team of Geraldine Heavey and Patricia Mahon qualified in first place with 37 points; Mary Quinn and Bridie Fay were second on 36 points.  The Castle Barna Trophy will be played in Daingean on Friday the 21st July.  This weeks Wednesday 9 hole Single Stableford was sponsored by Bernie Minnock and the winner with a score of 18 points was Mary Foy with Geraldine Heavey taking 2nd place on 17 points.

Castle Barna Golf Club. Sunday 23/04/17. GOY Medal.

The continuing fine weather attracted a good entry for the years first GOY Strokeplay competition. Aidan Geoghegan (13) played superbly throughout, the Walsh Island resident carding a net 65 to claim his first Medal event. The Gross prize went to plus handicapper Stephen Egan Jnr (+1) with 71. 2nd Nett was taken by Stephen Comerford (14) with a 67, his better back nine relegating Ray Hogan (21) to 3rd Nett. 4th Nett went to Nigel Molloy (15) with a 68. David O’Connell (8) completed the prizes with 70 Nett.

Sunday was a busy day on the Inter Club front. In the Leinster Under 15 Boys Matchplay Castle Barna trailed Birr 2 – 3 after the first leg in Birr last week. After five exiting matches the home side squared the match at 5 -5, meaning the result would be decided over extra holes. Showing no sign of nerves, Cathal Ryan proved to be the hero of the day as he calmly secured the win on the first play off hole.

The Leinster Fourball Team had a tough assignment with an away draw against New Forest. Captain James Mahon & Andy O`Neill secured a comfortable first win at home. Ollie Scally & Alan Graham won a titanic battle on the 18th away. With New Forest winning their other two home games it was all down to the final match in Castle Barna. Noel Maguire & Ambrose O`Brien dug deep from 3 down at one stage to be all square after eighteen. Noel & Ambrose kept the recovery going to win the match on the first extra hole and send Castle Barna through to the next round. A good start to the campaign for this team who had a great run to the semi finals last year, more of the same this year lads.

The Duggan Cup team were up against Mullingar with the Westmeath club having home advantage. Anthony Galvin & Seanie Geoghegan, and Stephen Egan Srn & John Lowbridge duly captured the two home games. After nearly 5 hours on the course Mullingar finally got over the line by winning two marathon matches on the 18th green. Next weekend there will be an Open Single Stableford, with a Furlong Open on Bank Holiday Monday.

Friday 21st Saturday 22nd April

The Castle Barna Ladies played their first GOY competition on the weekend of Friday April 21st and Saturday April 22nd. The competition was a single Stableford which was very well supported. Laura Dempsey was this weeks winner with a fantastic score of 40 points.  Two players brought in a score of 32 points and Betty Duffys better performance on the back nine edged her into second place ahead of Teresa Hartnett who was 3rd.

 

The Wednesday 9 hole Single Stableford played on the 19th April was a very closely contested competition with two players bringing in a score of 20 points.  a count back resulted in Caroline Curran taking first place and Catherine McGrath was 2nd.

 

The Ladies Club will play the Castle Barna Trophy Qualifier on the weekend of Friday 28th April – tee time10 am, and Saturday 29th April – tee time 8.15 am. There is also a Ladies 9 hole competion on Wednesday the19th April at 10.30 am and 5 pm.

Castle Barna Ladies Away Day

The Castle Barna Ladies had there first away day of 2017 on Saturday April 8th in Edenderry Golf Club and the beautiful sunny day result in a good turn out for the club. The members played a 3 ball scramble and congratulations go to the team of Geraldine Heavey,Teresa Bermingham and Kate Elliot who were the winners on the day. Second place went to the team of Laura Dempsey, Mavis Scally and Carmel Lawlor.

The Wednesday 9 hole played on the 5th April was won by Anne Daly on 18 points, there was a tie for second place with Kay O’Connor winning out after a count back.

The Ladies Club will play an 18 hole Easter Egg single stableford on the weekend of Friday 14th April – tee time 9 am, and Saturday 15th April – tee time 8.30 am. The 9 hole Spring Lamb competition continues and this can be played at any time. There is also a Ladies 9 hole competition on Wednesday the 12th April at 10.30 am and 5 pm.

First GOY 2017

The first GOY event of the season took place last weekend and attracted a large entry for the Shap Mangan Trophy qualifier. Excellent weather produced some hot scoring, with the competition winner being decided on countback after three players finished on 42 points. The winner was the big hitting David Walsh (18) who edged out former Captain Donal Scally (13) on a better back nine. Eamonn Lawlor (28) was the third player with 42 pts, the Croghan man producing one of his best ever rounds and having the consolation of the Div. 4 prize. David Brazil (4) shot one under for 41 pts to claim top spot in Div. 1 prize. Anthony Galvin (15) also shot 41 pts to take Div 2 denying Michael McAvinney after another countback. Joe Mann (16) continued his good recent form to succeed in Div 3 with 39 pts. The first round of the Walsh Kealey sponsored Thursday 9 hole competition saw Mickey Dunne take top spot with 21 pts. Our Barton Cup team fell at the first hurdle in losing 3 – 2 to Edenderry.
Next weekend`s competition is a fourball, which doubles up as a qualifier for the fourball matchplay. On Easter Monday there is a Ladies & Gents Open Singles.

Ladies Results 1st April

The Castle Barna Ladies played an 18 hole Single Stableford on the weekend of Friday March 31st and Saturday April 1st. The competition was well supported and Kate Elliott was this weeks winner with 32 points. Two players brought in a score of 28 points resulting in a countback and Bride Fay’s better performance on the back nine edged her into second place ahead of Betty Duffy.

There will be no competition on the weekend of the 7th & 8th April as the Ladies Club will be having an away day at Edenderry Golf Club on Saturday the 8th. The tee time for Edenderry is 12 noon.

The 9 hole Spring Lamb competition continues and this can be played at any time. There is also a Ladies 9 hole competition on Wednesday the 5th April at 10.30 am and 5 pm.
