Castle Barna Golf Club. Sunday, 13th August

Camillus McCauley (15) took the overall honours in last weekends GOY stableford competition with a fine return of 42pts. Runner up was the returning Lee O’Meara (2) who shot 3 under for 41pts. Lee got the better of Michael Brereton (3) on countback, Michael however had the consolation of the Division 1 prize with his 41pts. Another countback was needed to decide Div 2 where Peadar Hanley (15) with 38pts denied Clive Kelly. In Div 3 Francis Reilly (18) continued his excellent form of late scoring 40pts to secure his third appearance in the prizes in a month. Philip Hannigan (28) made his trip back to Dublin more enjoyable as he collected the Div 4 award with 39Pts.

Congratulations to Adam Kelly who finished a very creditable 5th overall and won the net prize in the Leinster Boys Under 15 finals which was played in Dun Laoghaire Golf Club last week. At the other end of the age spectrum our seniors hosted their counterparts from Portlaoise in the return leg of the Bowden-Nolan Shield. The home side had it all to do trailing by 41 points after the first leg. Play was in fourballs and with the ten best cards to count anything was possible. After some terrific performances Castle Barna ate into the 41 point deficit and when the final cards were checked the aggregate result was a draw. The teams will meet for a third time to decide this years winners, with Portlaoise having the home advantage.

Next weekend  a change to the schedule and we are running an 18 Hole Single Stableford.

Date for your Diary:  24th September – Club Championship  & Stewart Cup.  The Club Championship for those with a handicap of below 9 will be contested over 27 holes, while the Stewart`s Cup will be contested by those on 10 plus over 18 holes.

Castle Barna Golf Club. Captain`s Prize. Sunday 30th July.

In contrast to last Sunday`s perfect conditions the second round of James Mahon`s Captain`s Prize was played in very testing conditions with bursts of heavy showers and blustery winds. Despite this scoring was remarkable good. Leading by four after a 62 last week was Micky Dunne (16). After a steady start his hopes seemed to unravel after a getting into trouble on the 6th and running up an ugly nine. At half way he was caught at the top of the leaderboard by Seanie Geoghegan, but he regained his composure and produced a very good back nine to sign for a 71 and claim the 2017 Captain`s Prize on a total of 133 Net. In the end the winning margin was just a single shot from the man who introduced Micky to golf. Terry Carroll (24) is on the comeback trail having taken time away from golf in recent times. He made full use of his handicap allowance to record a second successive 67 for a 134 total and secure the runner up spot. The gross prize went to Stephen Egan Jr (+1) with a two under par total of 142. Second Gross went to Shay Egan (5) on 146. Two former winners took the 3rd & 4th net prizes, Seanie Geoghegan (15) and Jody Duffy (12), both made determined efforts to catch the leader with 67`s but ultimately came up short with 135 totals. The leading qualifier prize went to Martin G. Kelly after his 66 last week. Mick Carey (14) took the Past Captain`s with 140. Another 140 saw Dave Hughes (22) claim the Committee Prize. The visitors prize went to former Daingean P.P., Fr. Paddy O`Byrne.

Captain`s Plate: For those not involved in the main event there was a stableford competition. Dave Walsh (18) produced probably his best round ever, the Durrow man shooting a terrific 46 pts to romp home. A two week holiday away from golf proved to be the tonic for Andrew O`Neill (19). The Competition Secretary shot 40 pts to claim the runner up position. 38 pts saw Brian Flynn (12) and David Cleary (14) take the Div 1 & Div 2 prizes, while 39 pts was sufficient for Dermot Harte (18) and Eoghan O`Donoghue (23) to claim the Div 3 & Div 4 prizes.

Junior News: Congratulations to Adam Kelly who has qualified for the final of the Leinster Boys Under 13. Adam will compete against the top 50 under 13 boys in Leinster at Dun Laoghaire GC on 8th August. On 18th August Adam will be joined by Cathal Ryan as they have both qualified for the All Ireland Boys in Headford GC. Congratulations and best of luck to both at these prestigious events.

Seniors News: Almost 50 players took part in last Tuesday`s 3 person waltz which saw Tommy Finlay, Michael Lennon & Alan Graham win with an excellent 87 pts. On Tuesday 8th August or Seniors will play host to their Portlaoise counterparts in the return leg of the Bowden-Nolan Shield. The competition has being running for the last three years and is a fourball team event. Everyone can play on the day with the best ten cards to count. The home team will have their work cut out however as they trail by 41 points after the first leg.

Next weekend`s fixture is an Open Single Stableford.

Men’s Club – Sunday 9 July 2017

The good weather produced some very good scoring in last weekends Stableford GOY competition. Gerard Kenny (16) made his weekly journey from Dublin very worthwhile on Sunday. Gerard, helped by two birdies on 10 & 12, shot 42 Pts to take first place. Second place went to early riser Eammon Gorman (25) losing out on the top spot by virtue of a countback. A countback was also needed to decide Division 1, David O`Connell (8) 39 Pts edging out David Brazil. Rhode`s Vincent Murphy (14) collected his second Division 2 prize in three weeks after shooting 40 Pts. After winning the Minor Cup last week and getting a two shot cut, Francis Reilly (18) continued his great form to claim Division 3 with 41 Pts. The Division 4 honours went to Tom Dunne (20) on 40 Pts. Pat Rogers had a terrific day last Thursday when he shot 43 Pts to win the Open competition. Not content with that he went out again in the evening 9 hole and shot 23 Pts, which would have won the competition but for the cut incurred on his earlier effort. Still 66 points in 27 holes was some going, Pat reckons he should have retired years ago.
