Sunday 21st February 2016
Single Stableford Competition/Winter League Semi Finals

We had two events down for decision on a damp and blustery day last Sunday. First up was a single stableford competition sponsored by Property Team Mollin Estates. Matt Curran (18) made it two wins on the bounce, even with an internal cut Matt`s 40pts proved too big a target for all others. Early riser Gerard Kenny (16) was wide awake to score 39pts to take the runner up spot.
Later on it was the semi finals for the Fitzpatricks Garage Hyundai sponsored Winter League. The first match saw The Insulators captained by Stephen Comerford come up against Denis Meredith`s The Walter Mitties. Wins for Noel Maguire, Stephen Comerford, Keith Bracken and Phil Walsh gave The Insulators a 4.5 to 0.5 win. This sounded like a comprehensive thrashing but the matches were much closer with most going to the 16/17th. Martin Jordan saved a complete whitewash, halving his match with Jim Slattery.
The second semi was a much closer affair with Andrew O`Neill`s The A-Team facing Derek Hannon`s The Buzz Bees. The Buzz Bees went two up with wins for Dave O`Connell and Shane Corcoran. Ambrose O`Brien and Ger Heavy squared things up at 2 – 2. The deciding match saw Club Captain Adrian Stewart overcome Derek Hannon on the 17th after a very tightly contested affair to send the A-Team through.
The Winter League final gets underway at 11.00am next Sunday, with the presentation of prizes to follow shortly afterwards. Preceeding the final there will be a single stableford competition sponsored by John Connolly autos.
Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday. Bookings can be made at www.castlebarna.ie or by phoning the clubhouse on 057 9353384.New members always welcome – see web site for latest news.

Sunday 14th February 2016
Single Stableford Competition

There was a great buzz around the clubhouse on Sunday morning as the quarter finals for the Fitzpatricks Hyundai sponsored Winter League got underway. There would be no Valantines Day massacres as all four matches were very tightly contested affairs. Some ties would finish early, but these would be offset by ties being decided by the narrowest of margins. In the first match The Insulators captained by Stephen Comerford edged out Stephen Egan`s The Hurlers by 3 matches to 2. The same margin would see Denis Meredith`s The Walter Mitties through against the Pat Rogers led The High Flyers. The third tie went the way of Andrew O`Neill`s The A-Team, defeating Aidan Geoghegan`s Georgies Babies by 3.5 – 1.5. The final match between Derek Hannon`s The Buzz Bees and The Motor Factors led by Artur Geszczak was still tied after the five matches. So onto extra holes between Derek`s nominated player Dave O`Connell, and Artur`s nominated player – himself. Supported, or put off, by their team mates both hit poor drives off the first tee, before a subline chip from Dave set up the winning putt and send the Buzz Bees through. The semi finals get underway at 11.00am next Sunday with The Insulators taking on The Walter Mitties, followed at 11.45 with The A-Team up against the exhausted Buzz Bees.
Before the Winter League action there was a single stableford competition. Matt Curran from Mullingar took his first overall win with a great score of 44pts. In form Limerick man Mark Farrell took second on 43pts, with Dominic Goodings taking third on a tie break with 29pts.

At 10.07 The High Flyers captained by Pat Rogers take on Denis Meredith`s The Walter Mitties. Sunday 31st January 2016
Single Stableford Competition Round – Winter League.
Sponsored by Fitzpatricks Hyundai Garage Tullamore.

A damp and windy day greeted competitors last Sunday in Castle Barna. The elements did’nt effect Michael Dunne (19) too badly, the ever improving Geashill sharp-shooter posting 39pts to take first position on countback. Big hitting Daingean man Dan Shaughnessy (3), 37pts was enough to take the Cat 1 honours. Ollie McGlynn (13) out for the first time in quiet a while made the trip from Carbury worthwhile as he collected the Cat 2 prize with 37pts. Bracknagh golfers are faring very well over the winter and Aidan Geoghegan (19) was the latest winner from the backwoods, claiming Cat 3 with 39pts. Rhode’s Dermot Murphy (20) made an overdue return to the prizes as he collected Cat 4 with 35pts.
This was the final qualifying round for the Fitzpatricks Hyundai sponsored Winter League. The qualifiers have now been drawn into eight teams for the matchplay stage and these teams and matches can be viewed on the club noticeboard, website and facebook page. Quarter finals are listed for 14th February, don’t expect much love to be shown on the fairways.

Single Stableford Competition Round – Winter League.
Sunday 24th January 2016
Sponsored by Fitzpatricks Hyundai Garage Tullamore.

Pat Rogers (14) was victorious in the latest Winter League qualifier last Sunday. The long time club servant shooting 41pts to make a welcome return to the winners circle. Making it a good day for the Rogers family, and indeed for little people everywhere, was Pat`s son Declan (7), the club matchplay champion taking the Cat 1 honours with 38 pts. Jimmy Gallagher (15) made the early morning trip from Mullingar worthwhile as he collected the Cat 2 prize with 40pts. Trevor Wright (18) could have made it back to back outright wins, but an internal cut from last week left him with 40pts, but that was still enough to claim Cat 3 on a countback. Another back to back winner was Rathangan`s Denis Meredith (22), his 38pts being good enough for Cat 4 honours.

The club AGM took place last Thursday. Club Secretary Dan Cunningham produced a comprehensive report on all the club activities over the past year. Treasurer Brian Bermingham gave a detailed summary of the clubs finances, which glad to report showed a slight increase in income despite the loss of 6 competitions in 2015 due to bad weather. President and owner Kieran Mangan reported that membership was increasing, as were society bookings, signs that “the recovery” is finally reaching Daingean. Kieran went on to report on on-course developments, with the major drainage works along the 16th fairway being the most visible. Outgoing Captain John McCormack reflected on an enjoyable term. It was an honour to take on the role and he thanked Jimmy Slattery for nominating him. He also thanked all of the committee, members, family & friends for their support and advice during the year. John then presented incoming Captain, Adrian Stewart, with his Captains blazer. Adrian`s first task was to introduce Colm McGuinness as the new Junior Captain. Adrian thanked John for the nomination, adding that it was a great honour to captain the club that he joined the back in 1992 when it was still a 9 hole course. He promised to give the job 100% and looked forward to working with the committee, especially the new members. Castle Barna is noted for is friendliness and comradery and to this end Adrian hopes to re-energise the club presentation/social nights. He also announced plans for a few new competitions during the year.
