Maloney Maintenance Open Fourball
Sunday 27th March 2016

The Fourball competition on Easter Sunday introduced the new handicapping system, where players played off 9/10ths rather than the old ¾ handicap reduction. It also allowed pairs to sign in together on the computer, allowing results to be shown much quicker. The lesser handicap reduction had a significant effect on the scores returned, Niall Munroe (11) & Michael Mockler (16) teamed up to shoot an amazing 49pts, despite the cold, showery and blustery conditions. Well done to both lads who make the commute from Celbridge and Saggart most weekends. Another prize made its way to Bracknagh once again, as bush men Keith Bracken (14) partnered Tom Lawlor (18) produced 47pts to take the runner up spot.
The Furlong Easter Open singles was won by Mullingar based Gary O`Riordan (12) with an impressive 43pts ahead of Rhode veteran Pat Rogers (14) whose 39pts edged out Paul Cuskelly and young Henrick Cunningham on countback.
Next Weekend competition is the first Stableford GOY of the season sponsored by A&K Fashions/ Guy Clothing.
Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday. Bookings can be made at www.castlebarna.ie or by phoning the clubhouse on 057 9353384.New members always welcome – see web site for latest news.

Single Stableford Competition
Sunday 20th March 2016

Expert, Tullamore Single Stableford

There was great delight when Patrick Guinan (28) was declared the winner of last weekends competition. The Kilcormack man is an ever present each Sunday, and while his results have not been notable in the past, he always enjoys his round of golf. He finally put that record straight with an excellent 42 pts to claim his first ever outright win, a victory for peserverence. In the runner up position was David Hughes (23). The ex fire fighter scorched his way around the course to also post 42pts, only beaten for what would have been his first ever victory on a countback.
In Division 1 Shane Daly (5) making his first appearance in a while showed no signs of rustiness to win with 40pts. Ballinagar`s Brendan Scally (14) after intensive training with his arrows on Friday night came out on top in Div 2 with 40pts. Another 40pts claimed Div 3 for Trevor Wright (18). This was with an internal cut of -3 which meant that Trevor`s actual score on the day, 43pts, was good enough for him to win the “free sub” competition. A substantial saving on his golfing expenses in the year ahead. Tony O`Toole (22) shot 41pts for Div 4 honours to make it three players from Ballinagar in the prizes.
The St. Patricks Day Open was won by Esker Hills visitor Damien Guinan (16) on 40pts ahead of Mickey Dunne (19) 37pts.

Castle Barna Golf Club Results/Reports

Captain`s Drive In: Sunday 13th March saw Club Captain Adrian Stewart, Lady Captain Patricia Mahon and Junior Captain Colm McGuinness, officially get their year underway with the annual Captains Drive-in. Last years event was hampered by snow, but thankfully Sunday turned out to be fine for the large crowd of club and family members who had gathered at Castle Barna to greet their arrival.

The Captains arrived courtesy of a beautifully restored 1930`s orange Fordson tractor. Our thanks to Bill Pilkington and the Faile Vintage Club for supplying the transport.  After all the handshakes, hugs, kisses and photos it was up to the first tee for the actual drives. James Mahon acting as MC tried his best to settle the nerves of each Captain. First up was Patricia who opted for accuracy over distance, and she got her drive away with a gentle smooth swing.  Next up Colm showed no nerves whatsoever, and with the confidence of youth hit a huge drive right up the middle. This left all the pressure on Adrian, especially when most expected him to use his putter. With quivering arms and jelly like legs Adrian took aim and with perhaps his best swing ever, sent the ball up the middle of the fairway, much to his relief and to the astonishment of all the onlookers.  A 9 hole mixed scramble followed and that was won by Stephen Comerford, Deirdre Garry & Angela Murphy, ahead of Anne Hughes, Vincent Murphy & James Mahon.

The it was back to the packed clubhouse for some mould wine, food and music. Best wishes to each of our Captains in the year ahead.

Earlier in the day there was a 15 hole rumble sponsored by O`Grady Crane Hire. Ambrose O`Brien must have a very sore back this week as he had to carry Keith Bracken and Chris Merrigan all the way to post the winning score of 79pts. Runners up were Andy Dowdall, Sean Geoghegan and Terry O`Neill on 77pts. Coming up there will be an Open Singles on St. Patricks Day. Next weekend there is a single stableford sponsored by Expert, Tullamore. This event will also include the final of the free sub competition takes place. Qualifiers note that play is only available on Sunday from 10.00am. Please check the time sheet to book.

Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday.

Walsh Plumbing & Heating Supplies Single Stableford
Sunday 6th March 2016

The improving weather attracted a good entry for last weekends competition. Out on the course at first light, Mullingar resident Jimmy Gallagher (15), was immune to the low temperatures to post 40pts to claim first place but only after a countback. Runner up was taken by +1 golfer Stephen Egan Jr who is showing some great early season form, Stephen shooting 5 under to post 40pts. It proved to be a very good day for the Egan family with Stephen Senior claiming the Div 1 honours with 39pts. Div 2 also went to a countback between a number of players, with Mullingar`s Alan Leech (14) eventually coming out best with 39pts. Most people are trying to get out of Syria, but Chris Merrigan is heading there. Chris is off to the troubled land on peace keeping duties, and we wish him a safe and successful tour. Chris (16) signed off with 40pts for the Div 3 prize, to add to the 27 prizes he won last year. Another countback was required in Div 4 where last weeks overall winner Jimmy Dolan (27) continued his good form to take the spoils with 36pts.

Hole in One: Congratulations to Michael Lennon who recorded an ace at the 5th hole during the Seniors 3 Ball Classic last Tuesday. Mick`s memorable 6 iron helped his team to a top twenty finish in the event won by Kevin Pendergast, Mickey Dunne & Peter Dunne. The Seniors will be having a special event on Tuesday 15th March to mark the St. Patricks week, and are anticipating a large entry with Seniors Captain Joe Heuston having lined up lots of prizes.

Next Sundays competition is a 15 hole rumble sponsored by O`Grady Crane Hire.

Captains Drive In: Our Captains, Adrian Stewart (Gents), Patricia Mahon (Ladies) & Colm McGuinness (Juniors) will officially get the golfing season underway when they attempt their ceremonial drives on Sunday at 2.00pm. This will be followed by a mixed 9 hole scramble followed by some food, drink agus craic. Sunday 28th February 2016
Single Stableford Competition/Winter League Final.

The Fitzpatrick`s Hyundai backed Winter League Final was the main event of the day, but before that there was a single stableford competition, and with the improving weather it attracted a very strong entry. Jimmy Dolan (27) put together a great round scoring 44pts to claim his first outright victory, finishing two points clear of the in-form Denis Meredith (22) who took the runner up spot on 42pts even with an internal cut. The entry meant there would be four categories up for grabs. Stephen Egan Jr (+1) shot 3 under for 38pts to deservedly take the spoils in Div 1. Ballycommon`s Joe Mann (15) showed a return to form in taking Div 2 with 41pts. Another in-form player Aidan Geoghegan (17) shot 40pts which was good enough to take the Div 3 bragging rights, even with an internal cut. Out every week, Martin Jordan (22) got his reward for persistence by taking Div 4 with 37pts. Thanks to John Connolly Autos for their sponsorship this event.
At 11.00am the two teams contesting The Winter League Final assembled at the first tee. After a big win in the semi`s, The Insulators captained by Stephen Comerford were the favourites for many. But Andrew O`Neill`s The A-Team were quietly confident after coming through two tough encounters. In the first match Ger Heavey was in superb form, taking control early on to eventually see off Phil Walsh 5&4 to post the first point for The A-Team. The Insulators hit back with Stephen Comerford leading by example to record a 4&3 win over Ambrose O`Brien. Andrew Phillips gave the advantage back to The A-Team with a 3&2 victory over Noel Maguire. When Jim Slattery buckled under the pressure of playing against Club Captain Adrian Stewart on the 17th, The A-Team had reached the 3 games required, and the final match between Andrew O`Neill and Keith Bracken was called in. Final result A-Team 3.5, The Insulators 1.5. Defeated captain, Stephen Comerford, had some consolation when he picked up the prize for leading qualifier. Once again thanks to Fitzpatricks Garage Hyundai for their continued sponsorship of this competition.
The sun finally came out last Tuesday to attract a large number for the Open Seniors. The Edenderry trio of Sean Cooney, Mick Gaelhaey & Mick O`Toole won the rumble competition with 69. The Seniors will be having a special event on Tuesday 15th March to mark the St. Patricks week, and are anticipating a large entry with Seniors Captain Joe Heuston having lined up lots of prizes. Thursdays Open Singles was won by Micky Dunne with 42pts.
Next Sunday there will be a single stableford competition sponsored by Walsh Plumbing & Heating Supplies. This will be the final chance to enter the Free Sub competition, which will be contested on 22nd March.
Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday. Bookings can be made at www.castlebarna.ie or by phoning the clubhouse on 057 9353384.New members always welcome – see web site for latest news.
