The continuing fine weather attracted a good entry for the years first GOY Strokeplay competition. Aidan Geoghegan (13) played superbly throughout, the Walsh Island resident carding a net 65 to claim his first Medal event. The Gross prize went to plus handicapper Stephen Egan Jnr (+1) with 71. 2nd Nett was taken by Stephen Comerford (14) with a 67, his better back nine relegating Ray Hogan (21) to 3rd Nett. 4th Nett went to Nigel Molloy (15) with a 68. David O’Connell (8) completed the prizes with 70 Nett.
Sunday was a busy day on the Inter Club front. In the Leinster Under 15 Boys Matchplay Castle Barna trailed Birr 2 – 3 after the first leg in Birr last week. After five exiting matches the home side squared the match at 5 -5, meaning the result would be decided over extra holes. Showing no sign of nerves, Cathal Ryan proved to be the hero of the day as he calmly secured the win on the first play off hole.
The Leinster Fourball Team had a tough assignment with an away draw against New Forest. Captain James Mahon & Andy O`Neill secured a comfortable first win at home. Ollie Scally & Alan Graham won a titanic battle on the 18th away. With New Forest winning their other two home games it was all down to the final match in Castle Barna. Noel Maguire & Ambrose O`Brien dug deep from 3 down at one stage to be all square after eighteen. Noel & Ambrose kept the recovery going to win the match on the first extra hole and send Castle Barna through to the next round. A good start to the campaign for this team who had a great run to the semi finals last year, more of the same this year lads.
The Duggan Cup team were up against Mullingar with the Westmeath club having home advantage. Anthony Galvin & Seanie Geoghegan, and Stephen Egan Srn & John Lowbridge duly captured the two home games. After nearly 5 hours on the course Mullingar finally got over the line by winning two marathon matches on the 18th green. Next weekend there will be an Open Single Stableford, with a Furlong Open on Bank Holiday Monday.
