1916 Commemoration, Sunday 24th April
The centenary of 1916 was remembered during last Sundays competition. To make the competition a little different, double points were awarded on holes 1, 9 & 16, and this had a big bearing in the overall results. Scoring would prove difficult as the recently pole forked and sanded greens were hard, unpredictable and badly in need of some rain. Jimmy Gallagher (15) shot “an ordinary” 37pts for his round, but he added 7 additional points from the bonus holes to leave the Mullingar man with the winning score of 44pts on countback. This was his second win in six weeks, Jimmy obviously showing some good early season form. Runner up was Rathangan`s Michael McAvinney (16) also on 44 pts, including 8 bonus points, and also by countback. Cat 1 was taken by Daingean resident Neil Garton (10) on 41pts including 6 additional points. Seamie Feery (15) could only add 5 extra points but it was enough for a 41 point total to take the Cat 2 prize. John Thornton should have won last week but for an error on his card, but he had some consolation on Sunday by scoring 44pts (+7) to claim the Cat 3 honours. Verteran early bird Mick Keating had 38pts (+6) to take Cat 4.
On the Inter-Club front there was no joy for the Provincial Towns team who were well beaten by a strong New Forest outfit last Saturday.
Brian McCormack Srn won Thursdays round of the Walsh Kealy 9 hole Championship. This was played on the back nine for once and the surroundings proved unfamiliar to some !
The Seniors drew a large entry for a 3 Ball Rumble last Tuesday and the winners were Tommy Finlay, Peter Dunne & Noel Maughan. Noel makes the trip to Castle Barna almost every Tuesday, all the way from Tallaght. The trip home must have been very satisfying this time.
