Castle Barna Golf Club Mens Results/Reports 24/01/16

Single Stableford Competition Round – Winter League.
Sunday 24th January 2016
Sponsored by Fitzpatricks Hyundai Garage Tullamore.

Pat Rogers (14) was victorious in the latest Winter League qualifier last Sunday. The long time club servant shooting 41pts to make a welcome return to the winners circle. Making it a good day for the Rogers family, and indeed for little people everywhere, was Pat`s son Declan (7), the club matchplay champion taking the Cat 1 honours with 38 pts. Jimmy Gallagher (15) made the early morning trip from Mullingar worthwhile as he collected the Cat 2 prize with 40pts. Trevor Wright (18) could have made it back to back outright wins, but an internal cut from last week left him with 40pts, but that was still enough to claim Cat 3 on a countback. Another back to back winner was Rathangan`s Denis Meredith (22), his 38pts being good enough for Cat 4 honours.

The club AGM took place last Thursday. Club Secretary Dan Cunningham produced a comprehensive report on all the club activities over the past year. Treasurer Brian Bermingham gave a detailed summary of the clubs finances, which glad to report showed a slight increase in income despite the loss of 6 competitions in 2015 due to bad weather. President and owner Kieran Mangan reported that membership was increasing, as were society bookings, signs that “the recovery” is finally reaching Daingean. Kieran went on to report on on-course developments, with the major drainage works along the 16th fairway being the most visible. Outgoing Captain John McCormack reflected on an enjoyable term. It was an honour to take on the role and he thanked Jimmy Slattery for nominating him. He also thanked all of the committee, members, family & friends for their support and advice during the year. John then presented incoming Captain, Adrian Stewart, with his Captains blazer. Adrian`s first task was to introduce Colm McGuinness as the new Junior Captain. Adrian thanked John for the nomination, adding that it was a great honour to captain the club that he joined the back in 1992 when it was still a 9 hole course. He promised to give the job 100% and looked forward to working with the committee, especially the new members. Castle Barna is noted for is friendliness and comradery and to this end Adrian hopes to re-energise the club presentation/social nights. He also announced plans for a few new competitions during the year.
Note: Drainage works along the left side of the 16th fairway – This area is now temporarily Out of Bounds, as marked by white stakes.
