Single Stableford Competition
There was a great buzz around the clubhouse on Sunday morning as the quarter finals for the Fitzpatricks Hyundai sponsored Winter League got underway. There would be no Valantines Day massacres as all four matches were very tightly contested affairs. Some ties would finish early, but these would be offset by ties being decided by the narrowest of margins. In the first match The Insulators captained by Stephen Comerford edged out Stephen Egan`s The Hurlers by 3 matches to 2. The same margin would see Denis Meredith`s The Walter Mitties through against the Pat Rogers led The High Flyers. The third tie went the way of Andrew O`Neill`s The A-Team, defeating Aidan Geoghegan`s Georgies Babies by 3.5 – 1.5. The final match between Derek Hannon`s The Buzz Bees and The Motor Factors led by Artur Geszczak was still tied after the five matches. So onto extra holes between Derek`s nominated player Dave O`Connell, and Artur`s nominated player – himself. Supported, or put off, by their team mates both hit poor drives off the first tee, before a subline chip from Dave set up the winning putt and send the Buzz Bees through. The semi finals get underway at 11.00am next Sunday with The Insulators taking on The Walter Mitties, followed at 11.45 with The A-Team up against the exhausted Buzz Bees.
Before the Winter League action there was a single stableford competition. Matt Curran from Mullingar took his first overall win with a great score of 44pts. In form Limerick man Mark Farrell took second on 43pts, with Dominic Goodings taking third on a tie break with 29pts.
