GUI Pierce Purcell Shield
Castle Barna had the honour of hosting the GUI Pierce Purcell Shield regional qualifier last weekend. There were high hopes for the Castle Barna team playing on their home patch, but the team simply failed to perform in Saturday`s stroke play qualifying, finishing well adrift of the four qualifiers for Sunday`s matchplay semi finals. In the semi`s New Forest and Millicent each had convincing wins over Mullingar and Tullamore. New Forest were to win out the marathon event, overcoming the Clane team on a 3.5 to 1.5 scoreline in the final.
In between the Pierce Purcell contests there was a V. Par competition for members, sponsored by Property Team Mollin Estates. New member Peter Harte (16) won his first competition in Castle Barna with a score of +4. Second place went to Mountlucas man Peadar Hanley (15) with +3. Dermot Harte (17), a brother of the winner, took third with +2. But it was Peter who claimed the family bragging rights on the trip back home to Kilcormack.
With the Pierce Purcell team disappointing, there was better news from our other two interclub team over the weekend. The Castle Shield team had a 5-0 success over Edenderry. The score did not reflect the close encounter, as three of the matches went all the way to the 18th hole. The All Ireland Fourball team continued their impressive progress by overcoming Stackstown. The South Dublin side had no answer in the three matches in Daingean, with Stephen Comerford/Micky Dunne, Jimmy Slattery/Sean Doyle & Andrew O`Neill/Aidan Geoghegan all winning their ties by the 14th. Away Wes Daly/Darren Conlon were all square, and Michael McElvinney/Ian Kavanagh just two down when called in. The team now advance to the Leinster Quarter Final. Continued success lads.
Next weekend`s fixture is the Lady Captain`s (Patricia Mahon) Prize to the mens club. It is also a Shap Mangan Trophy counter sponsored by Expert Electrical. Our Senior Open continues every Tuesday and our Open Singles continue every Tuesday. Bookings can be made at Castlebarna.ie or by phoning the clubhouse at 057 935384. New members always welcome.
