Castle Barna Golf Club Men’s Open Week Results/Reports

Open Week 2nd – 10th May 2015.

Open week got underway over the bank holiday weekend, with a singles stableford sponsored by JD Scanlon & Co., Solicitors, Tullamore. One of the chief organiziers of the week was Competition Secretary Ger Peyton and he got his reward early shooting a great 44pts to win by two from the in form Robert Hogan. Shay Egan took Cat 1 with 39pts with Tullamore visitor Michael Egan shooting the same score for Cat 2.  Cat 3 went to Mark Farrell with 40pts, with Ian Kavanagh hitting double top for Cat 4. The OCM Seniors scramble on Tuesday 5th fell victim to the weather but has been re-scheduled for this week.

The Genesis sponsored Mixed Scotch Foresomes on Wed 6th was won by Terry Carroll & Ber Malone ahead of Michael Coffey & Caroline Curran. Thursdays Open Singles sponsopred by JK Travel proved to be a good event for visitors with Vincent Kelly (Portarlington) scoring 42pts to lead home New Forests Christopher Coffey 38pts and Christy Gorman (Tullamore). That evening the ”workers” got to play a 9 hole stroke supported by Dolan Fitness. Making most of the Mayweather was Seamie Floyd Feery who went the distance over Kevin Mann and Donal Scally.
More bad weather forced the cancellation of Fridays event. A busy week was rounded off with an Open Fourball over last weekend. Stephen Egan Sr and David O`Connell combined well to take this Temple Printing Co. sponsored competition with 43pts.
With the centenary of WW1 being commemorated at this time, I wonder if in 100 years time will “The Battle of Bracknagh” be similarly marked. Four young men set out from the village full of excitement and adventure, little knowing the horrors that lay ahead for two of them. The battle raged from the first shots and included several sorties into no-mans land. Finally after a brutal 4.5 hours, the runner up medals, and the bragging rights, were pinned to Denis Meredith & Aidan Geoghegan 42pts, fininishing just one ahead of their shellshocked neighbours Chris Merrigan & Keith Bracken.
Thanks to all our Open Week sponsors, please support them where you can. Next weekend competition is a GOY single stableford. Our seniors open continues every Tuesday and our open Stableford continues every Thursday. Bookings can be made at or by phoning the clubhouse on 057 9353384.
